Thomas Bailey

Born and raised in Birmingham, England, Tom graduated from the University of Cambridge with a PhD in History. While his research focused on colonial Kenya, Tom also taught world history to Cambridge undergraduates. Tom found teaching the most rewarding part of his doctorate. Whether they are responding to an AP English Literature prompt or writing a college essay, Tom helps students get their thoughts on paper. Tom believes that short, clear, and simply written sentences are the most effective form of communication. While most students view editing as a destructive process, Tom argues that editing is a creative exercise. By cutting superfluous words, students accentuate their most important ideas. Although he takes writing seriously, Tom argues that establishing a healthy work-life balance is the key to academic success. Outside of work, Tom likes to run and hike with his wife and young son, listen to audiobooks, and cook. Fulfilling the British stereotype, whenever Tom travels tea bags come with him.
